Soccer star Maradona stable after taken again to clinic

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Former soccer great Diego Maradona was in stable condition today, a day after being taken by ambulance to a private clinic with severe abdominal pains.Doctors at the Los Arcos Sanatorium said the 47-year-old Maradona was being treated by a team of doctors, psychiatrists and nutritionists.
Maradona was taken in late March to another clinic and treated for nearly two weeks for a bout of hepatitis blamed on alcohol abuse. Doctors said his health problems also were caused by excessive eating and smoking.
Released on Wednesday, he was out less than 78 hours before he had to be re-hospitalized.
"There are some alterations in his laboratory tests that require ongoing hospitalization," said a Los Arcos statement, without specifying what ails the former Argentine captain.
Revered in Argentina, Maradona led his country to the 1986 World Cup title and the final in 1990. But since retirement in 1997, he has had eight hospitalizations.
Maradona was near death during hospitalizations in 2000 and 2004 blamed on cocaine addiction. Cocaine was not involved in his current health problems, doctors said.
