Learn ways of Shambhala

The Kailua Shambhala Meditation Center's Dean Nelson is teaching a three-part free class, Brilliant and Luminous Health — Ancient Teachings on Healthcare from the Kingdom of Shambhala, in May.

SHINTO SHRINE WILL BLESS PETS

The Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha-Dazaifu Tenmangu, the Shinto shrine at 1239 Olomea St., is holding a pet blessing festival 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 3.

As part of Pet Appreciation Week, leashed or caged pets will receive a blessing as well as a "pet shave ice" (shave ice in a bowl topped with some Iams flavored sauce and a treat in dog and cat flavors).

CHRISTIAN WRITERS' GROUP FORMING

Windward Christian Writers Group will hold its first meeting at 10 a.m. April 28 at Faith Baptist Church, 1230 Kailua Road.

Membership in the group — open to those who write books and articles in a variety of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, children's — is free, but this opportunity is designed for writers who aspire to publication.

TIPS ON ATTRACTING THE POSITIVE IN LIFE

The Unity Church of Hawaii is hosting a two-part workshop, Attracting the Positive, at 6 p.m. Tuesday and April 24.

PRAYER EVENTS SET FOR MAY 3

A Hawai'i contingent will hold two events as part of the National Day of Prayer.

The theme for this year is "America, Unite in Prayer," based on the verse from II Chronicles 7:14: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

The events will be:

  • At noon May 3 at Kapolei District Park, across from the Kapolei Library.

  • 6:30 p.m. May 3 at the state Capitol.

    'THE SECRET' FREE ON SCREEN TONIGHT

    VIPASSANA TOPIC OF SEMINAR, RETREAT

    Vipassana (mindfulness) meditation practitioners Sayadaw U Lakkhana of Burma and Grahame White will be in town to participate in events:
