Man killed on Kapa'a Quarry Road identified

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office has identified the man killed Friday in a head-on collision of Kapa'a Quarry Road as Dieter Thate, 64, of Kailua.Thate was driving a 2005 Ford Explorer that veered left into the path of a 1997 Kenworth cargo tank truck at 2:10 p.m., according to police. The driver of the tanker truck, a 40-year-old Wai'anae man, was not injured.
Thate was a frequent contributor to The Advertiser's Letters to the Editor page and owned a tour business in Kailua.
