Fresno tops UH, 6-5, in first game of doubleheader

Loren Storey's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lift Fresno State over Hawai'i, 6-5, today in the first game of a Western Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif.

The Bulldogs (22-19 overall, 7-4 WAC) evened the series at 1 with the rubber game scheduled to follow later today. The Rainbows (25-14, 6-5) came from a 5-0 deficit by scoring four in the seventh and one in the eighth.

Brandon Burke (4-4) allowed a run in two innings for the Bulldogs, while Jayson Kramer (3-2) allowed a run in 3 1/3 innings.

Kramer retired the first batters in the bottom of the ninth, but Tom Sandell reached on a single to third and took second on Erik Wetzel's single. Storey singled to left to scored Sandell with the winning run.

Trailing 5-0, the Rainbows scored four in the seventh of Wilson to pull within one on RBI singles by Evan Zimny and Eli Christensen, an RBI ground out by Landon Hernandez and RBI double by Jon Hee.

The Bulldogs chipped away at UH starter Joshua Schneider, building their lead with solo home runs Steve Susdorf and Ozzie Lewis, who also had an RBI double, and RBI singles from Erik Wetzel and Loren Storey.

The Rainbows tied it in the top of the ninth against reliever Brandon Burke.

Zimny led off by getting hit by a pitch and was lifted for pinch runner Matt Roquemore. Hernandez singled to left with Roquemore stopping at second.

Kevin Fujii pinch ran for Hernandez. Christensen struck out with a foul bunt. Jon Hee singled to left, but Roquemore was thrown out at home trying to score, leaving runners at first and third. But pinch hitter Derek DuPree singled to score Fujii to tie the game at 5. Justin Frash grounded out to

the pitcher to end the inning.
