2 summer programs set for Maui intermediate students

The Maui News

WAILUKU — The state Department of Education Maui District office has announced two summer school programs for intermediate-level students in Maui County.

Summer schools are self-sufficient and based on a school's need or preference, according to the DOE announcement. The new summer break — shortened in 2006 to seven weeks to accommodate the year-round schedule — reduced the number of summer school programs the DOE could provide.

Officials have explained that challenges with recruiting teachers for summer schools and running a program that would not inhibit a school's preparations for the new school year were the major reasons summer schools had to be cut back.

Tuition for summer school for all grade levels will be $160 per student. Summer school sites are:

  • Iao School, grades 6-8, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., June 12-29; call Director Noel Kuraya, (808) 984-5618.

  • Molokai Middle School, grades 7-8, June 18-July 24, 7:55 a.m.-1 p.m.; call Director Sarah Amador-Rusnak, (808) 567-6940.

Classes at both sites will depend on enrollment and availability of teachers.
