Kaua'i's Kalalau Trail closed beyond Hanakoa Valley

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The Department of Land and Natural Resources has closed the Kalalau Trail beyond Hanakoa Valley due to reports of unsafe conditions in the Pohakuao area between the 6- and 9-mile markers.

A state parks crew was to fly in today by helicopter to inspect the trail and take any necessary action, said Department of Land and Natural Resources Chairman Peter Young. The crew will return Thursday afternoon.

A monthly maintenance trip planned for later in the week was moved up due to two complaints called in to the Kaua'i Parks office, Young said. Routine maintenance on the trail was last conducted in February.

The trail beyond Hanakoa will stay closed until it is deemed safe for public use, he said. Closure signs have been at the trailhead and at the trail leaving Hanakapi'ai Valley. In the meantime, issuance of camping permits has been suspended.
