HPD chief expresses sorrow at Va. Tech shooting

Advertiser Staff

In a news conference this afternoon, Honolulu police Chief Boisse P. Correa expressed sorrow at the fatal shootings at Virginia Tech University and said a similar incident is not likely to happen here.

However, the Honolulu Police Department is properly trained to handle a rampaging gunman.

"We are the safest major city in the U.S.," Correa said. "We've been training for the worst-case scenario for some time. We pray it doesn't happen here but we are prepared for it."

In the last year, the department's patrol officers and officers with the Specialized Services Division have simulated a scenario similar to the Virginia situation at the University of Hawai'i's Manoa campus.

The last time the so-called "active shooter" scenario was practiced at UH was March 28, Correa said.
