Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Department of the Medical Examiner has identified a 22-year-old man whose body was found floating in ocean waters near Kahala Saturday as Hiromichi Goto of Honolulu.

Goto had been fishing in the area before he was found motionless in the water about 11 a.m., police said.

Goto was taken to Straub Hospital and died there, officials said.

An autopsy found that Goto died of medical problems tied to a near-drowning. Foul play is not suspected.

Honolulu Police Lt. William Kato, who heads the department's homicide investigation unit, said Goto was fishing with several other people.

"They were in waist-deep water, and one minute he was there and the next minute when they looked around for him he wasn't there," Kato said.

Man arrested in tie to stolen car after diving into ocean

A 35-year-old man was arrested in the Wai'anae area early this morning after a police officer allegedly spotted him driving a stolen car.

An officer was transporting a prisoner when he saw the stolen car but could not pursue it, police said. He contacted other police officers, one of whom saw the car in question pull into a beach area near Farrington Highway and Ma'ili'ili Road. Police said the driver then got out of the car, ran toward Maile Point Beach Park, and dived into the ocean.

Officers waited for bout 10 minutes until the man emerged from the water and arrested him on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.
