DUI arrests up 17 percent on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

Big Island police arrested 33 drivers last week for drunk driving, raising the 2007 DUI arrest total to 389 compared to 333 at the same time last year.

The 17 percent increase is in part because of DUI roadblocks and patrols. Last week, nine of the drivers arrested were involved in accidents and six were under the age of 21.

Despite the rise in DUI arrests, major accidents on the Big Island have decreased by 16 percent. So far in 2007 there have been 633 major accidents compared to 757 at the same time in 2006. The number of traffic fatalities, 12, is the same as it was last year at this time.
