Oral Roberts gives Sutton seven-year extension

Associated Press

TULSA, Okla. — Oral Roberts basketball coach Scott Sutton agreed to a seven-year contract extension, a move that comes less than a week after he withdrew from consideration for the Wichita State job.

Sutton is the second-winningest coach in school history with a 144-102 record in eight seasons. The Golden Eagles have averaged more than 21 wins the past four seasons and have made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA tournament.

"We believe Scott Sutton is one of the finest coaches in the country, and we want him as part of the ORU family for a long time," athletic director Mike Carter said.

Sutton said Oral Roberts approached him about an extension before the Wichita State job came open. Financial terms of the agreement were not released Monday, but Sutton's current contract is believed to pay him between $200,000 and $250,000 a year.

In addition to being linked to Wichita State, the 36-year-old Sutton was mentioned as a candidate to replace Dana Altman at Creighton before Altman withdrew as Arkansas' new head coach and returned to Creighton.
