Lloyd Van De Car nominated to be Big Island judge

The state Judicial Selection Commission has chosen Lloyd Van De Car, a deputy attorney general in Hilo, as a nominee for District Court judge on the Big Island.The commission made the selection after the state Senate rejected two of Hawai'i Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald T.Y. Moon's nominees because Moon missed a constitutional deadline for the appointments.
Earlier this month, the commission picked Harry Freitas, an attorney with the Big Island's deputy corporation counsel, for a District Court vacancy on the Big Island. Freitas was also one of the nominees chosen by Moon.
But the commission decided to pick Van De Car instead of Anthony Bartholomew, a Hilo public defender, who had been chosen by Moon. The commission was under no obligation to follow Moon's choices once the authority over the appointments had shifted.
Van De Car would fill a vacancy created by the retirement of Family Court Judge Ben Gaddis if confirmed by the Senate.
