ON STAGE: A radio personality will help light up the Army Community Theatre's production of "Grease," opening May 10 at Richardson Theatre. Lanai, the morning drive deejay at Island 98.5, plays the smooth-talking Vince Fontaine, replacing Justin Cruz, the KQMQ The Zone deejay who bowed out of radio and the play to do weather at KHON.

A footnote to the musical "Altar Boyz," opening tomorrow at the Hawai'i Theatre: local presenter Andrew Meader of Meader Arts was once an altar boy in upstate New York. That's not the only reason he's doing the show; it's participatory fun, albeit with a Christian punch, something a family can see together. (Which is why it's still running in New York, off-Broadway.) Make a vow, get tickets — and start laughing and clapping. ...

Local boy Doug Kreeger, a Marius understudy in the Broadway revival of "Les Miserables," will assume the role in four upcoming performances: April 29 matinee (his birthday), May 1 (evening) and May 2 (matinee and evening). If his pals are heading to the Big Apple, this is a great opportunity to see him. ...

WHEE, THE PEOPLE: That was Magic Johnson dining at Nick's Fishmarket, his 6-foot-9 frame easily recognizable. Yep, Nick's owner-veep Ben Dowling was pleased with the superstar's presence. ...

Jake Shimabukuro, the 'ukulele ace, is off on yet another Mainland tour. He appears tomorrow at Borders at the Time-Warner building at Columbus Circle in New York and has a gig at Joe's Pub in Manhattan on Friday (where latest Brit sensation Amy Winehouse recently played). Shows in Massachusetts follow — and a Japan trek in May. ...

And another local trouper, singer Manny Lagod (formerly of The Ali'is), is heading home for two shows this Saturday at the Tower Grill at Aloha Tower Marketplace. The Farrington grad has recruited school chums Norma Lapot, Linda Medina and Fely Del Rosario to guest-perform. Who knows, they may delve into the Farrington alma mater at show's end. For reservations, call 537-4446 or visit Lagod's Web site, www.mannylagod.com. ...

Singer Traci Toguchi celebrated mother Jenny Toguchi's birthday in Las Vegas recently and also appeared on the Fox show "More," created by ex-Island producer Seth Feldman. Toguchi composed the show's theme song. She also connected with ex-Hawai'i and current Broadway director Peter Lawrence, who was in the gambling capital readying the launch of "Spamalot" at the Wynn resort. ...

When actor-pianist T.J. Tario was traveling with his fellow Diamond Head Theatre Shooting Stars in New York, the youngster would sneak off to practice on any piano he could find whenever he could — between shows, during workshops and group festivities, even while his colleagues slept. The dedication paid off; after the New York trip, Tario flew to Palm Desert, Calif., for the Virginia Waring International Piano competition, meeting up with his teacher, Ellen Masaki, where he placed third in the competition. He's also been invited to perform at the Aspen Music Festival and a Shanghai gig looms. His pastor at Kawai-aha'o Church, Kahu Curt Kekuna, shared the news with the congregation on Easter, much to Tario's embarrassment, according to parents Ron and Karli Tario. ...
