WAIMEA, Kaua'i — A 22-year old Waimea man died Sunday in a head-on collision on Kaumuali'i Highway.

Police said John Rapozo was killed when his Honda sedan was hit by a BMW sedan that crossed the center line of the highway at about 4:45 a.m. near mile-marker 5. The second driver, Bryston Louis, 20, of Koloa, was treated at Wilcox Hospital and released.

Police said alcohol, drugs or speed do not appear to be factors in the crash.

Rapozo is Kaua'i's third traffic fatality of the year.

GLOBAL WARMING MEASURE BACKED

Representatives of various faith organizations joined forces last week to rally support for measures to address solutions to global warming.

The Rev. Neal MacPherson of the Church of the Crossroads, Pastor Hollis Wright of St. Nicholas Church in Kapolei, Chuck Burrows with Ahahui Malama I ka Lokahi and Rabbi Peter Schaktman of Temple Emanu-El were among those who gathered at the state Capitol Friday to support House Bill 226, which seeks to limit the amount of greenhouse gases that Hawai'i can produce.

They and others also participated in the National Day of Climate Action Saturday at Church of the Crossroads in Honolulu.

"Christian communities must take global warming seriously and publicly advocate for legislative measures, such as HB 226, that will establish an enforceable limit on the amount of greenhouse gas that Hawai'i can produce," MacPherson said.

"We come from different backgrounds but we agree on one thing: the need for substantial and rapid action in order to stave off the disastrous effects of global warming," Jeff Mikulina, director of the Sierra Club, Hawaii Chapter.
