United States replaces Russia as boxing worlds host

Associated Press

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — The United States will host the boxing world championships in the fall after Russia was stripped of the competition, the first qualifying event for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

USA Boxing will work with the U.S. Olympic Committee to set the host city and date, the International Amateur Boxing Association said today. The championships originally were scheduled for Sept. 15-30 but most likely will be held in October.

"It is pleasing to see that the star event on the 2007 boxing calendar will be held in one of boxing's heartlands," AIBA president Ching-Kuo Wu said Wednesday.

The championships will involve more than 600 boxers from more than 100 countries.

Moscow was awarded the championships over Jeju, South Korea, but was stripped of the event in March when AIBA said the Russian boxing federation "failed on a number of issues." The Korean Boxing Association had the first right of refusal and declined in April.
