No tsunami threat after quakes hit Japan, California

Advertiser News Services

Earthquakes shook on both sides of the Pacific Ocean earlier this morning, but none were strong enough to bring a response from the Tsunami Warning Center.

An earthquake of magnitude-5.5 shook northern Japan, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The tremor hit the island of Hokkaido about 41 miles southeast of Sapporo, the USGS said in a preliminary e-mailed report. There was no immediate report of any damage from the quake, which hit shortly after midnight.

Elsewhere, a magnitude-5.0 earthquake also struck northern California early today, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter was 108 miles northwest of Sacramento.

The temblor struck at 1:42 a.m. West Coast time, said the USGS.

A magnitude-4 earthquake struck three hours later off the coast of central California, 180 miles south of the city of San Jose, the USGS said in another e-mailed statement.
