Hawaii Central Credit Union hit by phishing scam

Advertiser Staff

Hawaii Central Credit Union is taking steps to mitigate potential problems from a phishing e-mail targeting its members.

The credit union was the target of bogus e-mail effort for the first time as an e-mail made its way into electronic mailboxes today. It offers members $100 for taking a five-question survey. People clicking on the link are taken to a Web site that asks them to give their account number and passwords as well as credit card number, verification number and expiration date.

The credit union posted a message on its Web site saying it does not send unsolicited e-mails to members. It also was taking steps to try and get the bogus Web-site taken down.

Hawaii Central is the latest subject of phishing attacks on local credit unions. In the past year dozens of bogus e-mails have been sent trying to trick members of credit unions into giving personal information. Banks and credit unions have started an advertising campaign trying to educate people about the fraudulent messages.
