Hawaii Tofu closing up shop

Hawaii Tofu in Wahiawa will close its doors tomorrow after producing handmade tofu for more than 38 years.

Maria Nemoto, who owns the business with her husband, Herbert Nemoto, said they are closing so they can retire.

"We're getting old," she said with a laugh. Maria Nemoto, originally from Texas, learned how to make tofu from Herbert's mother, Haruko Nemoto, who started the business in 1968. Maria and Herbert ran the business for the past 23 years.

Hawaii Tofu makes about 300 blocks of tofu a day, and its customers include Safeway, Foodland, Mililani Bar-B-Q and Highland Inn, Maria Nemoto said.
