The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has closed the Kalalau Trail beyond Hanakoa Valley because of reports of unsafe conditions in the Poha-kuao area between the 6- and 9-mile markers. A state parks crew flew by helicopter yesterday to inspect the trail and take any necessary action, according to the DLNR.

A monthly maintenance trip planned for later in the week was moved up because of two complaints called in to the Kaua'i parks office. Routine maintenance on the trail was last conducted in February.

Issuance of camping permits has been suspended until the trail is deemed safe.
