Sacred Hearts put on a screening, cutting and passing clinic in a dominating victory last night over Word of Life.

The host Lancers ran their motion offense to perfection and remained unbeaten in Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II basketball with a 54-15 victory.

Sacred Hearts, which competed in Division I last season, improved to 9-0. Word of Life dropped to 1-7.

Sacred Hearts finished 19 of 39 from the field and forced 27 turnovers last night.

Nalani Bayne led Sacred Hearts with 10 points, and Samantha Valle and Kuhina Luis each added eight.

"It's all about team," Lancers coach Alan Matsui said. "If you check our box scores from the start of the season till now, there is no one person that dominates the scoring. Our highest scorer is at about 9.5 (points per game) and we have eight scorers; the lowest is about 6.5."

Sacred Hearts was able to get numerous layup opportunities with players running along the free-throw line and then cutting down the side of the lane. When a player broke open, she was often hit with an accurate pass.

"Spacing is always the key to an offense," Matsui said. "Obviously, we aren't big, so what we're trying to do is isolate and find a weakness on the other team and exploit that."

Word of Life players were often caught trailing far behind the cutters.

"Our girls kept getting caught over the screens, instead of trying to cut under or even jam the cutters," Firebrands coach Roy Alvarado said.

Sacred Hearts put on a nice display of unselfishness in the final minute of the first half.

Cara Smith penetrated and found a wide-open Maya Clark, who nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing with 52 seconds left.

Clark returned the favor by hitting Smith for a 3-pointer from the right wing to make it 32-8 with 3 seconds remaining.

"Basically, we try to work as a team, and we don't have any selfish players," Smith said.

On defense, the Lancers used a full-court press and man-to-man defense to stymie the Firebrands.

The Lancers took a 15-0 lead 5:50 into the game with many of the points coming off turnovers.

"Tonight we ran four different presses," Matsui said. "We'll run up to six different presses. So anytime the other team takes a timeout we switch it."

Matsui said his team is much better suited for Division II.

"Initially it was a little bit of a letdown, but it was almost a relief to them because in DI, you see how small we are," he said. "We had a hard time. We had a physical beating every night. It's hard to get the kids to come back optimistic and ready to work hard day after day when the season just drags on like that."

Matsui has seen the Lancers program grow since he took over.

"Two years ago, when I got hired here, we couldn't make a cut," he said. "We had seven on the varsity, seven on the JV, six on the intermediate. We had to walk around the campus with signs: " 'Anybody that can run and is willing to work, come out for basketball.' "

Matsui said 60 players came out for basketball this year.
