Highway near Waimea Bay shut from 9 to 11 a.m. today

Advertiser Staff

The State Department of Transportation will close Kamehameha Highway near Waimea Bay this morning for work related to the April 7 rockslide.

The highway will be closed in both directions from 9 to 11 a.m. while crews scale the cliffside for additional inspections in preparation for the scheduled complete re-opening of the road next week.

Drivers are advised to take an alternate route during the morning closure.

City buses and emergency vehicles will be escorted through the area during the two-hour closure. Pedestrians will also be escorted along the sidewalk area during the morning closure.

Work on a temporary protective fence and barrier is expected to be completed soon, which will allow the highway to reopen back to its normal two lanes of traffic.

Repair work for a permanent fencing and barrier will take place afterward.

The DOT said it thanks the public for their patience and understanding during the cleanup and repair work related to the rockslide.
