Three players dismissed from LSU football team

BATON ROUGE, La. — Three LSU football players were arrested during the past week, and today all three were dismissed in a public display of discipline by head coach Les Miles.

The players were offensive linemen Zhamal Thomas and Kyle Anderson and defensive back Troy Giddens.

"There is a standard that we insist upon with members of our football team when representing this university, our community and the state of Louisiana," Miles said in a prepared statement. "When that standard isn't met, some adjustments must be made. In this instance, it's the dismissal of these three players."

Miles has previously dismissed players from his team during his first two years on the job, but rarely has the action come so quickly after an incident.

Thomas and Giddens were arrested last week on charges of simple burglary of a female's residence at the West Campus Apartments and identity theft via the woman's credit card. Both were booked into East Baton Rouge Parish jail and later released on $8,000 and $8,500 bond, respectively. Anderson was arrested on a simple battery charge at a bar near the LSU campus.

All three were immediately suspended by Miles. They remain in school pending a review by the Dean of Students office. Their cases are also pending legally.

Giddens and Thomas would have been redshirt freshmen next season. Anderson signed in 2005 and redshirted that season. He would have been a sophomore next season.

Miles said he had previous team-related problems with all three players.

"It's unfortunate, but this action is necessary," Miles said. "I wish these young men well in their future endeavors."
