No one was seriously injured, but four women and two men aboard the helicopter were taken to the emergency room of Maui Memorial Hospital as a precaution, police Lt. Jimmy Bell said. The pilot was among those taken to the hospital, Bell said.
The incident occurred about 4 p.m.
Al Schwartz, an artist who lives next to the property in the 3000 block of Baldwin Avenue, said the helicopter that crashed was one of two that took off from the lawn of the private home.
Schwartz said the helicopters were both sitting on the lawn with their rotors spinning while they took on passengers who were gathered at the home.
The first helicopter took off and went over some pineapple fields.
About three minutes later, the second helicopter attempted to take off in the same direction, Schwartz said, but never rose above the height of trees on the outer edge of the property.
The helicopter apparently hit the trees and then landed on the ground.
One female passenger was taken away from the craft in a stretcher, but was later seen walking around. No one else seemed to be injured.
Schwartz said the property is owned by chef Bev Gannon who owns Hali'imaile General Store in Upcountry Maui. That could not be independently verified.
A representative of Sunshine Helicopters at the scene would not comment.
Bell said the helicopters were shuttling people from the property to Kapalua. The passengers belonged to a corporate group of 50-100 people from Princeton, N.J., he said.
Bell said a National Transportation Safety Board investigator from Honolulu was expected in Maui tonight.
