Dow gets within range of 13,000 mark

Stocks jumped sharply Friday, pushing the Dow Jones industrial average to a record close and within range of 13,000 as investors looked back on a week of surprisingly strong earnings reports. The major indexes each registered their third straight week of gains.

Among companies reporting quarterly earnings, 16 of the 30 companies that comprise the Dow industrials have turned in results and 10 of those have reported stronger-than-expected numbers.

The Dow Jones industrials rose 153.35, or 1.20 percent, to 12,961.98.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 13.62, or 0.93 percent, to 1,484.35.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 21.04, or 0.84 percent, to 2,526.39.

For the week:

  • The Dow is up 349.85, or 2.77 percent.

  • The S&P is up 31.50, or 2.17 percent.

  • The Nasdaq is up 34.45, or 1.38 percent.

    For the year:

  • The Dow is up 498.83, or 4.00 percent.

  • The S&P is up 66.05, or 4.66 percent.

  • The Nasdaq is up 111.10, or 4.60 percent.
