O'ahu tax surcharge generates $14.2M in first 3 months

Advertiser Staff

The new 0.5 percent county surcharge tax on O'ahu brought in lower-than-expected collections during the first three months of its existence, the state Department of Taxation said.

The tax yielded $14.2 million during the period, the bulk of which ($12 million) was collected in January. The department said February general excise tax returns were not due until April 2 and that quarterly tax filers have until April 30 to file their returns.

The department said about 15 percent of the general excise tax returns it received through March did not include anything in the section where taxpayers report the county surcharge.

The surcharge took effect on Jan. 1 to help pay for mass transit on O'ahu.
