Waikiki Aquarium host moi release today

The Waikiki Aquarium will host a moi fish release directly makai of the aquarium from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in coordination with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Booths will be set up, including: the state Department of Aquatic Resources' Moi Stock Enhancement Project, Ulua-Papio Tagging Project, "Got Fish!" Project, Alien Invasive Project, UH-Manoa Marine Option Program, city and county Storm Water Division, and NOAA-Marine Debris & Humpback Whale Sanctuary.

Up to 100 hatchery reared Pacific threadfin, or moi, will be released into the ocean waters of the aquarium in celebration of Earth Day. The fish being released are between 9 to 10 inches long. The minimum legal size for moi is 11 inches. Moi fishing season is closed from June through August.
