Fire department exhibits on display today on Moloka'i

Advertiser Staff

Personnel from the Maui Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau will be on Moloka'i today to provide keiki identification cards for children 12 and younger.

The cards include messages designed for children to remind them about fire safety. Firefighters will be on hand to answer questions about how the County's fire code affects building permits. Fire code books will be available for viewing.

A feature of the event will be the department's Fire Safety Trailer, a 39-foot-long trailer designed to demonstrate how fire sprinklers in a home operate in a real fire. A live fire can be started inside the trailer which then triggers installed sprinklers. The clear viewing sides of the trailer unit allows the public to observe the fire and sprinkler effect. According to Capt. Val Martin of the Prevention Bureau, this will be the first time since obtaining the trailer in 2005 that the department is making it available outside of Maui.

"For most people, it's the first time they will see a sprinkler in action and it encourages them to install sprinklers for their safety", said Martin. Other highlights of the unit include a door heated to mimic the temperature of a burning room. The public is taught how to check a door for heat, avoid it and find alternate escape routes. In addition, people will be able to experience a simulated smoke-filled room and learn how to crawl through a window to safety.

The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Mitchell Pauole Center in Kaunakakai.
