State task force seeks public input

The Hawai'i 2050 Sustainability Task Force is holding a series of meetings to gather public input on the long-term future of the state.

The schedule of meetings:

O'ahu: Today at Kailua High School cafeteria; April 28 at Sunset Beach Elementary School cafeteria; May 5 at McKinley High School cafeteria. All meetings 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Maui: 3 to 5 p.m. May 3 at J. Walter Cameron Center; 9 a.m. to noon May 5 at Maui Economic Opportunity, in the J. Walter Cameron Center complex.

Big Island: April 28 at Hilo High cafeteria; May 5 at Kealakehe High School library. All meetings 9 a.m. to noon.

Lana'i: 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 2 at Lana'i High and Elementary School cafeteria.

Moloka'i: 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 8 at a location to be announced.

HILO THIEVES TAKE ATM CASH BOX

Big Island police were looking for the thieves who removed an automated teller machine from a downtown Hilo storefront and took the money inside.

Police say the thieves removed the ATM from a business window on Mamo Street sometime Monday night by dismantling its facing and removing the inner console, which contained an undisclosed amount of money.

Police said the thieves fled in a Jeep Cherokee that had been stolen from the Aupuni Center.

Damage to the ATM was estimated at $3,500.

Police ask anyone with information about the case to call Officer Ben Tajon at 961-2213 or the police department's non-emergency number at 935-3311. Anonymous tips may be called in to Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.



DEBRIS PICKUP AT SANDY BEACH PARK

A shoreline debris pickup and beach cleanup has been organized by state Rep. Gene Ward, R-17th (Kalama Valley, Queen's Gate, Hawai'i Kai), at 1 p.m. tomorrow.

Volunteers should bring plastic trash bags and gloves. Meet at the parking lot east of Sandy Beach Park.

The cleanup should take no longer than 1 1/2-hours of walking and talking along the way.

Residents have complained of broken glass and burned wooden pallets in the area.

The cleanup is being organized in conjunction with Earth Day, which is tomorrow. For more information, call Pam Kam at 358-9145.



AQUARIUM PLANS RELEASE OF MOI

The Waikiki Aquarium will release moi fish into the ocean today.

The release, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., is in coordination with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. The fish will be released behind the aquarium.

There also will be informational booths set up at the event, with information on invasive species, native flora and fauna and preventing pollution.
