A Don Ho Museum in Waikiki? Hmmm...

StoryChat: Comment on this story

Sometimes, some of the best ideas come in simplest forms.

This one was posited to us from a reader, who upon learning of entertainer Don Ho's death wrote a letter to the editor suggesting the state put together a "Don Ho museum" in Waikiki — a place where residents and visitors alike could come together to remember just how special Ho was.

Not a bad idea.

Of course, it would mean finding a suitable site, perhaps a slice of donated space at one of our Waikiki hotels; or perhaps somewhere within the Waikiki Convention Center.

Perhaps, with the support of Ho's friends and family, precious memorabilia could be collected and housed in this "place of honor," remembering a man who has meant so much to Hawai'i on a variety of levels.

Perhaps, just maybe, the state could assist in helping to find a suitable nonprofit to run the show and come up with a plan to make it happen. This Don Ho museum, to ensure access to all folks, could be similar to other museums: free of charge, with donations accepted.

Perhaps — working collaboratively with the Ho 'ohana — it could all come together.

"It would be such a positive thing for our community, for visitors and local people who were such a part of Don's life," says Ho's widow, Haumea Hebenstreit Ho.

Perhaps — if we all pulled together — we could really make this happen.
