Feldman shoots to Mid-Pac Open lead

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Pro Andrew Feldman fired a 3-under-par 69 yesterday to open up a two-stroke lead after two rounds of the Mid-Pacific Open at Mid-Pacific Country Club in Lanikai.

Feldman has a 36-hole total of 141. Fellow pros Darren Summers (71) and first-round leader Chad Saladin (76) were at 143 with defending champion David Ishii (73), Kevin Carll (75), Casey Nakama (74) and Jeffrey Ferry (72) at 145.

Ishii won the 36-hole, pro-senior flight with his 145 total. Leland Lindsay (76) finished second at 148, followed by Mark Morrison (75) at 149.

Casey Watabu, the 2006 Public Links champion, who missed the cut in last month's Masters, is the top amateur at 74—148. Alika Bell (75), Thomas Kua (77) and Paul Kimura (76) are at 150.

The field in all flights were cut for the final two rounds — Pro flight (154), Championship flight (160), A flight (173) and B flight (181).

VETERAN CALCAVECCHIA IN ZURICH CLASSIC LEAD

Mark Calcavecchia was on the PGA Tour before Zurich Classic first-round leader Kyle Reifers was born.

They both put themselves in some tough spots during yesterday's second round at Vondale, La., and the seasoned pro handled it better than the tour rookie.

"It's a miracle I don't have any bogeys yet, considering the places I hit it today," Calcavecchia said after his 3-under 69 vaulted him from second place to the top of the leaderboard.

The 47-year-old former British Open champ stood at 9 under 135, a shot ahead of Lucas Glover (69) and Nick Watney (67).

"I shot the lowest score humanly possible today, considering the places I was," said Calcavecchia, who won the PODS Championship last month for his 13th PGA Tour title. "It kind of reminded me of Tiger Woods, who seems to make every 10-foot par putt he looks at when he needs to."

Reifers, who shot a course-record 64 on Thursday, repeatedly pulled shots left off of the tee, costing him his first two bogeys of the tournament as he failed to consolidate the two-shot lead he had when the day began. He finished with a 73, leaving him tied for fourth at 7 under 137 with Charley Hoffman (69).

Punahou School alum Parker McLachlin rallied from an opening 75 with an even-par 72 yesterday, but missed the 143 cut with a 147 total.

JAMES'S 5-UNDER 67 LEADS LEGENDS OF GOLF

England's Mark James shot a 5-under 67 in chilly, windy conditions yesterday to take the first-round lead in the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf at Savannah, Ga.

James, seeking his second Champions Tour win of the year, eagled the 530-yard, par-5 11th, hitting a 3-wood within 6 feet of the pin. Defending champion Jay Haas, Tom Purtzer and Tom Kite opened with 68s.

"My short game was good. It was as simple as that," said James, fresh off his annual ski trip to the French Alps. "On a day like today, you have to be able to chip and putt."

FRANCE'S JACQUELIN LEADS BY THREE IN BMW OPEN

France's Raphael Jacquelin shot a 3-under 69 for a three-stroke lead over South Korea's Lee Sung in the BMW Asian Open at Shanghai, China.

Jacquelin had a 9-under 135 total in the event sanctioned by the European and Asian tours. Lee shot a 70 for a 138 total.
