Elderly woman dies after being hit in crosswalk on North Kuakini

Advertiser Staff

An elderly woman died tonight after being struck by a car at the intersection of North Kuakini and 'Alaneo streets.

The accident at the 1700 block of 'Alaneo and 600 block of North Kuakini was reported at 5:46 p.m.

The 76-year-old woman died at The Queen's Medical Center.

Police said she was crossing from the diamondhead side of the roadway at the same time a 2001 Honda Accord was turning left onto 'Alaneo from North Kuakini.

The traffic light was green for both the car and pedestrian but it was not immediately known what the pedestrian light signal was, police said.

The 77-year-old woman driver was not injured.

Pedestrians have accounted for 11 of O'ahu's 28 traffic fatalities in 2007. The Honolulu Police Department launched a stringent pedestrian safety enforcement program in early March.
