Brushfire near Waikele reported 'contained'

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters reported a brushfire today in a gulch between Waikele and Village Park "contained" at 4:30 p.m.

Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Frank Johnson said the fire burned 60 acres, and despite windy conditions, firefighters managed to keep it from threatening homes. There were no evacuations today.

A fire in June 2005 in the same area came closer to homes and did force evacuations.

Johnson said nine engine companies, three tankers, a tender and two helicopters were involved in the firefight, which started at 1:13 p.m. A total of 60 firefighters were at the scene.
