Waipahu Elementary honoring local author

Advertiser Staff

Students at Waipahu Elementary today will be tipping their hats — literally — to a world-renowned local author who dedicated his latest book to the kids at the school.

Author James Rumford, who wrote and illustrated "Don't Touch My Hat," is being honored at a "Mr. Rumford Day" assembly from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. this morning.

Students will be wearing buttons designed in a drawing contest and have been encouraged to wear hats. Each grade will make a presentation of some sort to Rumford, who will be signing copies of his books at the school. The school's relationship with the author goes back to when Waipahu Elementary purchased his second book, "The Island-below-the-Star." He came to the school at that time and discussed how he put the book together, starting the relationship.

Rumford has written and illustrated more than a dozen books.
