Off-duty officer fires shot at alleged auto thieves

Advertiser Staff

An off-duty Honolulu police officer fired a shot today at two men who allegedly drove toward him as they tried to steal his son's car, police said.

No one was injured and police captured one of the alleged auto thieves in the 12:45 a.m. incident at an 'Aiea residence.

The off-duty officer, a 25-year HPD veteran, was awakened by noise outside his bedroom window and saw two men breaking into his son's car. The officer confronted the two suspects and identified himself as a police officer.

The officer fired a shot at the windshield when the men revved the engine of the vehicle and drove at him, police said.

The passenger in the car, an 18-year-old man, was captured but the driver fled the scene.

The suspect was booked on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, auto theft, breaking into a car and possession of a switch-blade knife.
