Murder charge expected in beating death

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office today released autopsy findings on cause and manner of death on a 69-year-old beating victim and woman pedestrian.

The man died Thursday night at The Queen's Medical Center after being injured April 7 in a Wai'anae fast-food restaurant restroom from a blunt force injury to the head due to an assault. Manner was listed as homicide.

The medical examiner did not release the victim's name, but he is identified by police in court records as Domingo Correa of Wai'anae.

Gary R. Avilez, 35, was charged with attempted murder on April 9 in connection with the Correa case. The medical examiner findings will likely result in prosecutors seeking a grand jury indictment for murder against Avilez.

An autopsy also determined Jae Hyeong Sim, Sunday's pedestrian fatality victim, died of cranial cerebral injury due to an accidental motor vehicle and pedestrian collision.
