DUI arrests up 16 percent on Big Island

Police arrested 16 drivers on the Big Island last week for drunk driving, bringing the 2007 DUI total through April 23 to 405 — 100 more than at that same time last year, an increase of 15 percent.

Three of the drivers arrested last week were involved in traffic crashes. The continuing DUI roadblocks and patrols may be showing up in fewer major accicdents, though. So far, there have been 680 major accidents on the Big Island in 2007, compared with 808 at the time time in 2006, a 6 percent drop.
