St. Andrew's Priory students' art on display

Advertiser Staff

An art exhibit that's on display at Kahala Mall through Sunday is featuring the art of four St. Andrew's Prior School seniors who won Scholastic Art awards.

Jordan Higa, Cassandra Hurlbut, Hannah Lively and Samantha Kwok each won the Scholastic Art Award at a competition earlier this month in New York.

Higa was a Gold Key winner in the Hawai'i competition for her photography portfolio and her painting "Winding Down." The same painting won the American Visions award, which is the competition's highest state-level recognition. This year, only five of hundreds of Hawai'i entries received the award.

In the national competition which had thousands of entries, Higa's photography portfolio won the Silver Award. Only 140 portfolios won the award.

Hurlburt was Hawai'i's only Gold Key winner in video category, for her short film "Walking."

The Kahala Mall show also includes the photography of Amy Chun whose work won third place in this year's Canon Photography Awards, which is open to both students and professional photographers.

The students are in the Priory's portfolio art class, which is open to juniors and seniors and taught by Larry Prado.

The Kahala Mall exhibition is part of the Priory's 140th year celebration that runs through Ascension Day, May 27.
