Schools facilities group today holds roundtable talk

Advertiser Staff

The state Board of Education's ad-hoc committee on facilities will hold its first meeting at 3 this afternoon. It will include a roundtable discussion with invited guests who represent various organizations and other interested persons.

Members of school communities — principals, teachers, staff, School Community Council members, parents, involved community members — and the general public are invited to share ideas, suggestions, and concerns regarding the best use of DOE facilities and how to maximize use of the DOE's resources.

The meeting will take place in the BOE's meeting room, Queen Liliuokalani Building, 4th Fl., 1390 Miller Street, Honolulu.

BOE Member Breene Harimoto, committee chairperson, says he expects the committee to address:

  • New schools;

  • Overcrowded schools;

  • Small schools;

  • Use of excess classrooms or closed schools (for example: DOE offices, charter schools, DOE alternative schools, magnet schools, special schools);

  • Urban school models that require smaller footprints (i.e., mainland-style school buildings);

  • Consolidation of DOE offices; and,

  • Ownership of school buildings and land.

    The committee will not address school repair, maintenance and facility rental issues.
