Magistrate Barry Kurren today ordered 55-year-old Keith K. Kuraoka held without bail on federal firearm and meth-trafficking charges stemming from a March 24 shooting death at his Waia'nae home.

Kuraoka was charged in a recently unsealed April 12 complaint filed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with knowingly and intentionally possessing methamphetamine for distribution, and intentionally using a firearm in relation to a drug-trafficking crime.

Jason H. Sylva, 28, died after being shot in the chest in what police described as an armed robbery attempt and shootout at Kuraoka's home at 85-126 Maiu'u Road. A shotgun was found near Sylva's body.

Honolulu police are still looking for two men with Sylva who fled in a car.

Kuraoka claims he shot in self defense.

The federal complaint is based on evidence seized in a warrant search of Kuraoka's home, which included a Remington Model Nylon 66 .22-caliber semiautomatic rifle and numerous spent casings from the master bedroom; bullets from another weapon in the kitchen/dining room area; a glass drug-smoking pipe; two digital scales; 69.4 grams of marijuana, and three bags of crystal methamphetamine wighing about 58 grams.

The federal action comes under the Project Safe Neighborhood law.

Kuraoka has a preliminary hearing scheduled before Kurren on May 1.
