Waikiki restaurant fire quickly extinguished

Advertiser Staff

A grease fire today in the Top of Waikiki restaurant's 21st-floor kitchen forced evacuation of the Waikiki Business Plaza building.

The fire was nearly extinguished when the first firefighting company responding to the 2:35 p.m. alarm arrived at 2270 Kalakaua Ave., according to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Frank Johnson.

Johnson said cooks using extinguishers and discharge from a fire-prevention system in the kitchen kept the fire from spreading. No one was in the restaurant, which is two floors below the kitchen, he said.

The evacuation was in response to the building's fire alarm system, which went off. Everyone was back in the building at 3:15 p.m., he said.
