Fake explosive device closed parking garage for two hours

By Rod Ohira

A cardboard device designed to look like a pipe bomb forced the closure of Restaurant Row's parking garage tonight for nearly two hours.

Police Specialized Services Division bomb technicians attempted to detonate the device and discovered it was not an explosive.

The garage was reopened at 9:30 p.m.

The fake device was made of cardboard from what appeared to be paper rolls that were covered with tape, giving it the appearance of PVC plastic pipes, police said.

It was discovered by Restaurant Row security in plain view in the middle section of the parking structure at about 7:45 p.m.

Police said there were no calls, no threats made to Restaurant Row management, which decided against evacuating restaurants or businesses.
