The new Roy's Restaurant at Waikiki Beach Walk opens this week and plans a fundraiser opening event at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Beneficiary is the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawai'i, which offers assistance to tourists in times of crisis or when they have been victims of a crime or accident.

The $175-per-person event includes food and cocktail stations, a blessing and Hawaiian ceremony coordinated by Tihati Productions, music and a silent auction. For tickets, call VASH at 926-8274 or check the Web site www.visitoralohasocietyofhawaii.org.

OPENING MAY 28

SEE THE FAMOUS SUSHI BAR — AND MAYBE NOBU

The long-awaited Nobu Waikiki restaurant is set to open May 28 in the newly renovated Waikiki Parc hotel. It will feature the famed sushi bar of scorched ash that is so familiar to regulars of his 18 restaurants around the world that when it was briefly glimpsed in the movie "Notting Hill," his customers recognized the location even though the Nobu name was never shown. And, at least for the opening, it will feature Nobu Matsuhisa himself; he's in town with partner Richard Notar checking details and supervising the rigorous two months' training required of staff. The hot line chef is Lindsey Ozawa and the head sushi chef is Toshiyuki Sasajima.
