The Honolulu Fire Department received funding yesterday for two new sets of extrication equipment, better known as "jaws of life."Atlas Insurance Agency and Fireman's Fund Insurance Company are giving the $30,000 grant. The heavy-rescue tools enable firefighters to more quickly extricate victims trapped in car crashes.
Fire Chief Kenneth Silva said in a news release that the new tools will be placed on fire engines that cover specific areas of the island designated as needing this rescue capability.
"These new extrication sets will enable us to provide much broader geographical coverage for serious vehicle crashes," Silva stated. "Budget restraints often prevent fire departments from purchasing all the equipment they need, which is why we're so happy to receive this grant from Atlas Insurance and Fireman's Fund."
