Legislature to investigate Bureau of Conveyances

Advertiser Staff

The state House and Senate are planning to form a special joint investigative committee to look into potential wrongdoing at the Bureau of Conveyances, which is already the target of state criminal and ethics investigations.

The committee would likely have subpoena power to investigate the security of recorded documents, private computer access and document tampering.

The allegations arose during the Senate's confirmation hearings of Peter Young as director of the Department of Land and Natural Resources. The Senate voted against Young's confirmation on Tuesday, citing problems at the bureau as one factor.

The bureau has been plagued by backlogs in recording documents and intense factionalism between the regular and land court registration branches that has damaged morale.
