Punahou School has named David Trifonovitch, former head coach of the Hawai'i Tsunami professional soccer team, as its new varsity boys soccer coach.

Trifonovitch replaces Bob Clague, who guided the Buffanblu to 21 Interscholastic League of Honolulu championships and 16 state titles in 34 years at the helm.

According to a school press release, Trifonovitch grew up in Windward O'ahu and has more than 25 years of coaching experience at the high school, club and professional levels.

"David has the experience and enthusiasm to continue Punahou's tradition of excellence in soccer," Kale Ane, Punahou associate athletic director, said in the release. "The selection committee chose David from an outstanding candidate candidate pool. We are very excited about Punahou's soccer future."

Trifonovitch, who played at Cal State Dominguez Hills, has been active in the AYSO and HYSA youth programs.
