Waikiki Spam Jam street party set for Saturday

Advertiser Staff

Waikiki will celebrate Hawai'i's favorite canned meat with the fifth Annual Waikiki Spam Jam street party on Saturday.

The fest runs from 4 to 10 p.m. and will close Kalakaua Avenue, between Seaside and Ka'iulani Avenues.

How popular is that blue can? Officials say almost seven million cans of Spam are eaten every year in Hawaii, which means more Spam is consumed per person in Hawaii than is consumed in any other state in the United States.

The family event will feature two entertainment stages, food booths with restaurants serving Spam in many forms and two tents selling Spam-themed to include T-shirts, shorts and slippers.

Hawaiian craft booths also will be set up on the street.

Lead sponsor Outrigger and Ohana Hotels in Waikiki will offer guests checking in for the weekend a free upgrade, based on availability, with the donation of a can of Spam, which will be donated to the Hawaii Foodbank.

Other sponsors include Hormel Foods Corporation, Aloha Airlines, Hawaii Tourism Authority, Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, and This Week Magazines.
