Advertiser Staff

More than 200 residents, business owners and advocates are in attendance at a summit today on the future of Kalihi.

The Kalihi revitalization summit, which began at 4 p.m. and runs until 7 p.m. at Farrington High School, will cover a range of topics, from pedestrian safety to energizing business in the neighborhood.

Going into the summit, many were optimistic the session would kick off a long process to make Kalihi a more livable community.

"I've lived in Kalihi all my life and I want to know what I can do to make it better," said Ilima Aylett, a 70-plus-year resident of Kalihi. "I hope it can get better."

Mayor Mufi Hannemann is set to talk at about 5 p.m.

City officials say he is to announce a new pedestrian safety pilot project for the community, along with other city initiatives.

Other talks at the summit include: economic opportunities in the neighborhood, upcoming development in the community, strengthening Kalihi's workforce, and empowering youth.
