Don Ho's memorial service in Waikiki will likely draw 25,000 people, more than double an original estimate of 10,000, one of the organizers said yesterday.

Cha Thompson, who has served as spokeswoman for the Ho 'ohana since he died April 14, said police predicted the larger crowd after the service on Saturday, May 5, was shifted from the morning to the afternoon and evening.

It will be held on Queen's Surf Beach, across from the Honolulu Zoo.

Ho's ashes will be scattered off Waikiki at 4:30 p.m., with canoes launching from in front of the Royal Hawaiian hotel.

"We'll then return to the shores for the celebration of his life," Thompson said.

The service will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the same spot where Sunset on the Beach events are held. People will be able to watch live video of the scattering of Ho's ashes.

Thompson said organizers are working with city and state officials to set up the event. Staffs for both Gov. Linda Lingle and Mayor Mufi Hannemann are providing support.

The tribute will be co-hosted by Thompson, co-owner of Tihati Productions, and John DeFries, Big Island developer of the Hokuli'a project and a longtime Ho friend.

With approval from Haumea Hebenstreit Ho, Don's wife, Thompson has finalized a roster of participating entertainers, including Nina Keali'iwahamana, Melveen Leed, Willie K, the Brothers Cazimero, Society of Seven Las Vegas, Marlene Sai, Iva Kinimaka, Jimmy Borges and Matt Catingub.

Also on the bill: Robin Wilson, one-time Ho regular from the Duke Kahanamoku's club era, who will perform one of Ho's signature tunes, "I'll Remember You"; Hoku Ho, Don's entertainer daughter; and five youngsters who have been dubbed Don's kids in his Ohana Waikiki Beachcomber hotel show — Taimane Gardner, Maka'ala, Jasmine, Archeil and Briana.

Imaikalani Young will front a backup band, including Brickwood Galuteria and old-time musicians who worked with Ho; Keith Haugen will lead a group singing of "Hawai'i Pono'i."
