Wednesday is the entry deadline for the 2007 U.S. Women's Open. Hawai'i will again host a local and sectional qualifier, with the sectional winner advancing to the national championship, June 28 to July 1 at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C.

The 18-hole local qualifying will be May 12 at Turtle Bay's Fazio course. The 36-hole sectional is June 12 at Turtle Bay's Palmer Course. Qualifiers from approximately 16 local sites advance to seven sectionals.

Applications are available at golf courses throughout Hawai'i, or by calling the USGA at (908) 234-2300. They are also online at usga.org. The event is open to professional players, and to amateurs with a Handicap Index not exceeding 4.4. For more information, contact the USGA or Mary Bea Porter-King (marybea@aloha.net).

TEAM EVENT QUALIFYING AT MAKALEI GOLF CLUB

Makalei Golf Club is one of five Hawai'i sites to host qualifying for the PGA McGladrey Team Championship.

McGladrey is a new PGA of America-sanctioned event. The net best-ball format is open to male and female golfers of all levels.

Local qualifying will take place across the state, with winners advancing to sectional qualifying at Turtle Bay Aug. 5. The National Championship is Sept. 10 to 12 at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.

Local qualifying schedule is: Saturday at Ka'anapali; May 26 at Makalei and Kahili; June 9 at Turtle Bay and Oahu Country Club.

SHORT PUTTS

Tomorrow's Aloha Section PGA/UH Pro-Am Series has been moved from Pearl Country to Makaha Resort. It is the second of a four pro-am series established to fund a scholarship for the University of Hawai'i men's and women's golf teams.

Sacred Hearts junior Ayaka Kaneko missed the cut by three shots at last weekend's Fuji Sankei Ladies Classic, a stop on the Japan LPGA tour. Kaneko shot 77-74—151. She will play in the Salonpass World Ladies, May 3 to 6 at Tokyo Yomiuri Country Club.

Ko Olina Golf Club is hosting a free Play Golf America Demo Day Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the driving range. Representatives from Titleist/Cobra, Nike, Ping, and TaylorMade will be on hand. Ko Olina pros will offer free 15-minute club fitting assessments and the pro shop will be having a Sidewalk Sale. BMW of Honolulu has been added as a partner for the "Ultimate Drive" competition.

Desiree Ting shot 74 at Pukalani and 73 at Maui Country Club to win the Maui Women's Championship earlier this month. Ting's 147 total was a shot better than Bobbi Kokx, who closed with 71. Janice Teruya (85-166) won A Flight, Amy Yorke (94-181) B Flight, Femia Calavn (98-188) C Flight and Janice Hussey (97-194) D Flight. The tournament was sponsored by Jim Sanders Real Estate.

The Big Island Country Club will offer special rates May 1 to 8 following aerification of the greens. Kama'aiana rate is $45, visitors $85 and juniors $25. Call 325-5044 for tee times.
