Kailua and Roosevelt went back and forth yesterday and it was the Surfriders who got the decisive tug on the rope in their final at-bat for a 5-4 victory and the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division crown.

Kailua scored the winning run with no outs in the bottom of the seventh on a fielding error by the first baseman with the bases loaded.

Kailua (9-1) will receive a first-round bye in next week's OIA tournament.

"It's just one step of the way to where we're trying to go," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said of the East title. "It's not the main goal we're trying to reach right now."

In the seventh, Kale Sumner led off with a walk against Rough Riders starter Keoni Manago.

Nick Wong relieved and threw a wild pitch with Kainoa Uemoto at the plate. Uemoto singled to right, which put runners at the corners.

After Keenan Tanaka was intentionally walked to load the bases, Preston Nakata hit a high hopper to the right side. The ball bounced off the first baseman's glove and toward home plate, easily scoring Sumner.

"I was just trying to get it in play," Nakata said. "That guy had a pretty good curve."

Roosevelt coach Craig Arakawa said: "We kind of figured it would be a game like this — it would come down to a one-run game type thing. Both teams played hard and you can't ask for anything more."

Nakata, a senior left-hander, was pressed into action because starter Zack Akamine (1 1/3 innings) was ineffective and Marcus Mathews (two-thirds) got injured.

Nakata allowed six hits and three runs — one earned — over the final five innings.

"I actually wasn't expecting to pitch at all today," Nakata said. "They told me they were going to save me for the playoffs."

Manago gave Roosevelt a 1-0 lead by homering on the second pitch of the game. Kailua went up 2-1 in the second on an RBI single by Robert DeMarsh and an error on a botched rundown play by Roosevelt with runners at the corners.

Roosevelt (7-2-1) tied it in the fourth on a ground out by TJ Bae.

Akamine put Kailua ahead 5-3 with a two-run, ground-rule double to right-center on a 1-2 pitch. Nakata and DeMarsh scored on the play.

"To fire me up on that one, coach Corey used reverse psychology and got me mad," Akamine said.

Prior to the at-bat, Ishigo told Akamine: "Do you want me to pinch hit for you?"

In the top of the seventh, Nakata recorded two quick outs, but allowed one run and loaded the bases after a double, walk, single and an error.

Tyler Nitahara had an infield single off shortstop Akamine's glove. Wong scored on the play to tie it at 4-4 and Akamine, who dived to his backhand side, chased the ball down in short left field.

Christian Awaya tried to score from second, but Akamine hit catcher Raynor Yokoi with a perfect one-hop throw to nail him.
