State wants to tag $25M for Kukui Gardens purchase

Advertiser Staff

The state is likely to earmark $25 million toward the purchase of the Kukui Gardens rental housing complex, pending full Legislative approval next week.

Kukui Gardens is set to lose its affordable housing agreement in 2011. Since affordable units are already at a premium, the state has made it a priority to keep the apartments open to low-income families.

About 2,500 tenants live in the 857-unit apartment complex.

Lawmakers said they expect another $26 million request next year.
